Midjourney is a subscription image service. Stable Diffusion is a family of image models from Stability AI that you can run locally or through hosted services, each with its own licence. One is a product you pay to use; the other is a model you deploy.
Choose Midjourney if…
- You want a ready service for image creation and visual exploration with no set-up.
- You are happy to pay: recorded plans run from Basic at $10 a month to Mega at $120.
Choose Stable Diffusion if…
- You want to choose the model, licence and deployment route, including self-hosting.
- You want free use under the Community Licence for qualifying use.
Check before you pay: Midjourney has no general free trial, and privacy and video options depend on the plan. For Stable Diffusion, commercial users above $1M annual revenue need an Enterprise licence, and hosting or API use can cost extra.
