Outcome and preparation
Coding-agent costs can include subscription access, model inference and separate hosted execution. A small practice task helps you learn the charging model without turning exploration into an open-ended session. Start with a repository you control and a change you can review quickly.
Step 1: Identify each charging layer
Read the current pricing page and account usage view. Write down subscription cost, included allowance, provider charges and hosted execution charges separately. Amp and Kilo document different usage arrangements; an open-source client does not make an external model free. Do not compare token prices from different providers as though they were the total session cost.
Step 2: Choose a bounded task
Use one fixture, such as changing a button label in a small sample app. State the files the agent may edit, the expected behavior and one verification command. Set a personal ceiling before starting. A fictional practice ceiling of 2 currency units is a planning example, not a promise that any provider can complete the task within it.
Step 3: Configure controls and stopping points
Use an actual account spend cap or quota where supported. If the product offers only alerts, treat them as notifications rather than hard enforcement. Ask for a plan before editing, inspect one diff, and stop after one verification attempt if further work would exceed your limit. A sentence in the prompt is not a billing control.
Read the result and the bill together
Record starting and ending usage, model/provider, commands run, changed files and outcome. A passing task can still be too expensive for your repeat workflow. A cheap session that leaves incorrect code is not a successful saving. For the button example, compare the final label in the rendered app and confirm no unrelated files changed.
Build a repeatable practice log
Keep a short session ledger instead of claiming a general productivity multiplier. Pricing, token allowances and routing change over time. This article explains a budgeting method based on documentation, not a measured cost comparison or hands-on benchmark. Expand the task only after you understand which line of the usage view changed.
