Freelance AI Skills: Where Demand Grew in 2026, Where It Shrank

What Upwork, Fiverr, Malt and a Bangladesh study say about AI freelance demand, with the warnings that matter: searches are not orders, and growth from a small base is still small.

At a glance

  • Upwork reports clients hiring for AI-related work up 109% in 2025, with AI video up 329% and AI integration up 178%.
  • Fiverr's search growth is large for Claude Code (+938%) and n8n AI automation (+125%), but searches are not orders and the bases can be small.
  • In Bangladesh, posts for writing and content fell 21% and image creation 17% in the posts one study counted; a drop in posts does not prove the cause.
  • Pick one lane, collect 10 real client briefs, and test with one sample before you change your whole profile.

The short answer: AI work is growing, basic work is not

Clients are paying for AI-related work, but not for everything. Upwork says the number of clients hiring freelancers for AI-related work grew 109% year over year in 2025. In Fiverr's search data, people searched much more for "Claude Code" (+938%) and for n8n AI automation (+125%) in the latest six months than in the six before. Over the same period, plain data-entry typing searches rose only 10%. In Bangladesh, one study counted fewer posts for writing and image jobs.

This page maps what grew, what stayed flat, how to read these numbers without fooling yourself, and a 7-day plan to test one lane.

What grew

Upwork (US marketplace, January to December 2025, report released February 2026):

  • AI video generation and editing: +329%, the highest of all categories.
  • AI integration: +178%.
  • AI data annotation and labeling: +154%.
  • AI chatbot development: +71%.

Fiverr Business Trends Index (searches, May to October 2025 compared with November 2025 to April 2026):

  • Claude Code: +938%.
  • Video and animation overall: +278%.
  • Excel data cleaning: +210%.
  • n8n AI automation: +125%.

Malt (a European marketplace, 2025 data, its own promotional report): AI agent briefs multiplied by 60, and n8n project demand grew 14-fold.

What stayed flat or shrank

In Fiverr's data, "data" overall grew only 3% and data-entry typing 10%. Malt says about 40% of new tech freelancers highlighted JavaScript on their profiles in 2024, and under 20% in 2025.

Bangladesh. LightCastle Partners (10 August 2026) reports a 21% decrease in job posts for writing and content within eight months of ChatGPT's launch, and a 17% decrease in image-creation posts after image tools arrived. The country has about 650,000 registered freelancers and the study estimates about US$500 million a year for the economy. It also notes rising demand for AI data annotation and AI video generation and editing, citing Upwork.

A drop in posts does not prove AI caused it. It is a signal to watch, not a verdict.

How to read these numbers honestly

  1. Searches are not orders. Fiverr's index measures what people searched for, not what they paid for.
  2. Big percentages can come from small bases. +938% from a very small number is still a small number. Fiverr does not give the base.
  3. It is the company's own marketplace. Upwork, Fiverr and Malt describe their own platforms, and Malt's report is promotional.
  4. Growth is not pay. None of these numbers tell you what a freelancer earned.

Use them to choose where to look, then check with real client briefs.

Pick one lane to test

Four lanes show up in the growth lists. For each one, ask: what does a client actually receive?

  • AI video editing: a short edited video from the client's footage, with captions and clean sound.
  • Workflow automation (for example n8n): one automation that moves information between the client's tools, with a plain guide and a way to switch it off.
  • Excel and data cleaning with AI checking: a clean file plus a short note of what was changed and what was checked by hand.
  • Chatbot or AI integration set-up: a working assistant on one task, with a list of questions it should refuse.

Choose the lane where you already have a little skill or a sample. Do not choose by the biggest percentage.

A 7-day plan

  • Day 1: pick one lane.
  • Day 2: search that lane on two marketplaces and save 10 real client briefs. Note the deliverable and the budget in each.
  • Day 3 and 4: build one sample for one brief using free tools. Keep a log of every mistake the AI made and how you caught it.
  • Day 5: write a clear offer: what is included, what you check yourself, how long it takes, and your lowest price based on the budgets you saw.
  • Day 6: do one pilot for a friend or a small business and ask for written feedback.
  • Day 7: publish the sample and update your profile. Set a date, 30 days away, to compare replies with hours spent.

Before you send a sample, read the marketplace's own rules about AI-made work.

About pricing

We do not give hourly rates here. The ranges we found online came from marketing blogs and disagreed with each other. The honest method is Day 2 of the plan: your price floor comes from the budgets in the 10 real briefs you saved, adjusted for your time.

Honest limits

Upwork's figures describe its US marketplace in 2025. Fiverr and Malt figures reach us through a third-party summary, and we could not open Upwork's own report. None of these numbers promise income or work. Check each platform's current fee and AI rules before you rely on it.
