Phones and AI Plans in 2027: Buy Smart in a Memory Squeeze

TrendForce and Counterpoint say memory chips are tight through 2027, and Counterpoint expects fewer phones to ship. What that means for buying a phone or an AI plan, and what nobody can tell you yet.

At a glance

  • TrendForce (29 September 2026) expects memory to stay tight through 2027 and projects the blended HBM price up 121% year on year.
  • Counterpoint (22 June 2026) expects 2026 smartphone shipments to fall 13.9% to 1.08 billion, blaming the memory supply crisis, while GenAI-capable phones rise to 45% in 2026 and 52% in 2027.
  • No source we found forecasts device or AI-plan prices for 2027, so treat any exact price claim as a guess.
  • Cheap abilities get cheaper while the best model stays expensive: choose the plan by the job, not the label.

The short answer: wait for facts, not labels

AI data centres use a lot of memory chips, and two research firms say supply stays tight through 2027. Counterpoint expects fewer phones to ship because of it. What it did not tell us is what your next phone will cost. This page sets out what is known, what is not, and a simple way to buy a phone or an AI plan without paying for a label.

What the sources say

  • TrendForce (29 September 2026) raised its 2027 outlook for HBM, the high-bandwidth memory used in AI chips. It projects the blended average selling price up 121% year on year, and says memory supply stays tight through 2027 with the HBM market supply-constrained.
  • Counterpoint (22 June 2026) forecasts global smartphone shipments of 1.08 billion in 2026, down 13.9% and the lowest on record. It blames the ongoing memory supply crisis. It also forecasts that GenAI-capable smartphones reach 45% of shipments in 2026, up from 36% in 2025, and 52% in 2027.

Both are forecasts. HBM is a specialised memory for AI servers, not the memory inside your phone, so do not read the 121% as a phone price rise.

What we could not find

No source we opened forecasts the retail price of phones, laptops or AI subscriptions in 2027. Posts that give an exact percentage are guessing. We also did not find reliable data on laptops, so this page does not make a claim about them.

"AI phone" will not tell you much

If more than half of phones sold in 2027 count as GenAI-capable, as Counterpoint forecasts, the label will describe most phones. That is our inference, not a Counterpoint claim. Check these instead: how much memory (RAM) it has, how many years of updates the maker promises, and whether the AI features you want run on the phone or need an internet connection and an account.

Cloud app or on-device: decide first

Ask: which AI jobs do you do every week? If you mostly use a chat app in a browser or an app, the AI runs on the provider's servers and your phone only needs a good connection and enough memory to run the app. If you want features that work offline or keep data on the device, check the exact feature list on the maker's page, not the box.

AI plans: cheap abilities, expensive top models

Epoch AI (12 March 2025) found that the price of reaching a fixed level of ability fell between 9 and 900 times per year, depending on the benchmark. For GPT-4-level results on PhD-level science questions it fell about 40 times per year. Epoch also says the fastest drops happened in the most recent year, so it is less clear they will continue. Its analysis covers about three years to early 2025.

The best model is a different story. Anthropic says Claude Mythos Preview, which is limited to a small group and not planned for general release, will cost participants $25 per million input tokens and $125 per million output tokens after the preview.

The pattern: yesterday's ability gets cheaper, and the top ability can stay costly. Choose by the job.

A 6-step buying plan

  1. Write your AI jobs for the week: drafting, summarising, photo edits, translation.
  2. Check which jobs need the cloud and which really need the phone.
  3. Keep your current device if it still gets updates and runs your apps well. Waiting costs nothing.
  4. If you must buy, compare RAM, years of updates and the exact AI features, not the "AI" badge.
  5. Prefer monthly AI plans over yearly while prices and free tiers keep changing. Cancel when a free plan does the job. See AI plan changes for dated changes we track.
  6. Use a cheaper model for routine jobs and keep the strongest one for hard tasks.

Honest limits

All 2027 numbers here are forecasts by named research firms, and forecasts miss. TrendForce's 121% concerns HBM, not consumer prices. We did not test any phone or AI plan for this page. Anthropic's pricing is as stated on its page; we have not checked how it applies to any customer.
