The useful result

Create three size previews and identify where a crop loses necessary subject details.

  • Create three size previews and identify where a crop loses necessary subject details.
  • Identify the details to preserve
  • Preview three canvases
  • Choose or regenerate deliberately

One image rarely fits every social placement. A portrait may lose its headroom in a landscape crop, while a square crop can cut off a useful prop. Use three previews to separate the original artwork from the display frame. This exercise does not rely on a particular generator or promise that outpainting will preserve a subject perfectly.

Before you start

  • An image you own or a generated fictional image
  • An image editor with canvas sizing and crop previews

Review evidence

Original editorial workflow. Provider facts were checked against the linked primary references; worked examples are fictional and illustrative, not observed platform tests.

1

Identify the details to preserve

Choose a fictional café or portrait and list the essential details before resizing. For the pumpkin café, keep the whole pumpkin outline, window and cinnamon bun.

Example / expected result

Preserve list: pumpkin outline; glowing window; bun.

Check your result

The list contains visible details rather than assumptions about the scene.

2

Preview three canvases

Make 4:5, 1:1 and 16:9 previews in your editor without overwriting the original. Compare a fitted full image with a filled crop in each canvas. Add a neutral background or a new layout when fitting leaves space.

Example / expected result

Expected observation: a wide crop may clip the top or base of a tall subject.

Check your result

Every preview is labelled with its ratio, and lost details are recorded.

3

Choose or regenerate deliberately

Select the layout that preserves the important details. If regenerating or expanding the background, inspect the result again for changed edges, anatomy or props. Keep important text in a separate editable layer.

Example / expected result

A wide layout can fit the complete café with side margins instead of cutting its roof.

Check your result

All items on the preserve list remain visible at the intended phone size.

When it goes wrong

Filling a frame can crop the subject. Fitting can add margins. Generated expansion may change details, so compare it with the original instead of assuming it is only extra background.

Make it your own

Use the corgi photo strip and make a landscape preview that shows all four frames. Compare it with a filled crop.
