How to read this leaderboard
Read the list from top to bottom as steps up in price and in score, not as a ranking from best to worst. The first step is the cheapest model that still scores in the top half. The last step is the highest score available. Pick the step that fits your budget. The line on the chart also runs through a few very cheap models that score below the middle of the field. They are not listed here, because most real work needs more capability than they offer. Blended price assumes three input tokens for every output token: (3 x input price + output price) / 4. It is a typical mix for chat and document work. Your own mix may differ.
Questions people ask
What does the frontier mean?
It is the set of models you cannot beat on both price and score at once. If a model is not on it, another model costs the same or less and scores at least as high.
Is a model off the frontier a bad choice?
Not necessarily. It may suit your apps, privacy rules, languages or tools better. The frontier only compares list price and the Epoch score.
Why are some models missing?
Models without a list price, with a price of zero or without an Epoch score cannot be placed, so they are left out rather than guessed.
How often does the list change?
Whenever a price or score changes enough to move a model on or off the frontier. Large price changes are checked before they appear here.
Where does the data come from?
Scores come from Epoch AI's open benchmark data (licensed CC BY 4.0). We match models across sources, rank them and show them in charts, without changing the scores. Epoch AI does not endorse this site. Prices and context windows come from the open-source LiteLLM price list (MIT licence), which records each model maker's own price page. Prices change often, so confirm on the maker's site before you buy.
How often is this leaderboard updated?
We check our open data sources every day and show the date of the data at the top of the page. A model only moves when its source publishes new results, so a number can stay the same for weeks.
